WHAT IS ART THERAPY?

ART THERAPY USES THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF MAKING ART TO IMPROVE AND ENHANCE THE PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING. IT ALLOWS CLIENTS TO EXPLORE THEIR FEELINGS, THOUGHTS & WORRIES WITHIN A SAFE SPACE.

hello, my name is Mairi Perry.

I am an art therapist based in Edinburgh.

I offer psychodynamic art therapy primarily to children & young people but also work with adults. My role is to help people express thoughts and feelings they may not be aware they have (often known as unconscious thoughts).

Often these unconscious thoughts affect our mood and behaviour in ways that we aren't even aware of, and which may not always make sense to us.

Through creative activities and play, art therapy can gently help people to explore these deeper feelings, helping them process emotions, reduce anxiety, and gain a better sense of themself.

Art therapy provides a safe and supportive space where they can express what's on their minds in a way that feels natural and comfortable.

I am a fully qualified Art Psychotherapist registered member of BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists), and HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council).

“We always feel very welcomed, mairi is very creative and charismatic. my daughter always looks forward to meeting her and trying new things”

The art making process can be guided by your feelings, thoughts and experiences. You may start after a prompt or creating something that comes to mind. The therapist will support and facilitate discussion, helping you gain insight into your emotions and experiences.

What happens in a session?

No, you do not need to be good at art and no experience is necessary.

The focus is not on the artistic quality of the work but on the individual’s inner experiences and the therapeutic process.

Do I need to be good at art?

“It is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self” D.W.WINNICOTT
